I’m a big fan of companies putting their money where their mouths are. So when I heard about the rather quiet way the wireless phone giant, Verizon Wireless, was working to promote domestic violence awareness and prevention, I was intrigued. After checking it out a bit more, I learned that not only are they getting information out during their eight city “Journey of Hope” tour, but through their Hopeline program, they have provided over 100,000 wireless phones (with MILLIONS of free minutes) to aid domestic violence victims since 2001. That’s impressive!
The Journey of Hope tour is the first-ever initiative to collect and record domestic violence stories on smartphones and tablets. The program also gives consumers easy options to support those affected by domestic violence by donating no longer used phones and texting donations to support local organizations.
Tomorrow the “Journey of Hope” tour, which commemorates October as National Domestic Violence Awareness Month, stops in Atlanta’s Centennial Park.
Wireless phones and technology can serve as a vital link to emergency or support services in a time of crisis or as a reliable, safe connection to employers, family and friends as survivors rebuild their lives. Exclusive to Verizon, HopeLine puts Verizon’s technology and the nation’s most reliable and largest wireless network to work in communities by turning no-longer-used wireless phones into support for victims of domestic violence.
You can help victims yourself by donating old wireless phones. Verizon Wireless even provides a postage-paid label so you don’t have to pay for shipping. Or, if you’re near Centennial Park tomorrow, you can donate your no-longer-used wireless phones, batteries and accessories at the “Journey of Hope” bus.
