So…it’s actually been Girl Scout Cookie time for 21 days now. Have you seen the status updates and tweets begging asking for you to buy a box of their daughter’s Girl Scout cookies? Have you been hit up by some sweet little girls knocking on your front door like it was 1954? Or maybe their cute faces made you slow your roll and purchase some at the cookie table outside of Starbucks. I used to think it was sweet, until I became one of those Moms. 2014 is the year I officially have a Girl Scout (well, a Daisy to be exact) and I’m now helping her sell Girl Scout cookies. And it is a Business!
But did you know that selling the cookies is not just about thickening your waistline or making some organization a few bucks? It’s about teaching girls like my daughter goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Sure, at six she can only do so much but she’s learning and I’m tasked with helping her along the way. I like the way the Girl Scout website puts it: “Buying Girl Scout Cookies is about more than just handing over money for a box…Your purchase means you get tasty cookies—and a girl learns skills that last a lifetime.”
Now that you know the real deal behind Girl Scout cookies, go ahead and buy a box…or 20. Be that cool friend/co-worker/relative who buys a bunch of cookies and sends them to military serving overseas. (The Girl Scout organization actually does that right for you.) Help a girl learn some real -world business experience and wash the lesson down with a couple Tagalongs, or maybe a Thin Mint or two, or Samoas…I digress. Just support your local Girl Scout!
Don’t know any Girl Scouts? There’s an app for that. Go here to download the Cookie Finder app. And if you’re in Atlanta and want to support my little Daisy, please do let me know!
