As a new homeowner, you may be feeling overwhelmed with the many things you want to get down. I was (and still am)! Besides the tasks of moving, making your home feel comfortable is a lot! The good news is that you don’t need tons of times for these DIY ideas for the home. Some you can get done in an hour or two. Others may take a few days. All of them will make your life a little easier and save you time down the road. They will also make your home a little more…you!
4 DIY Ideas for the Home
1. Paint
One of the biggest and simple transformations for new homeowners is to add your own paint to the home. This can take time depending on the size of the rooms so my suggestion would be to start small and take your time. Visit a paint store and have someone help you pick out various colors that work for your house. Grab some samples and paint a small section of the wall with the color to see if you like it or not. Once you find your perfect paint color, use painters tape to mark off the edges. Start with big strokes and take your time. Be sure to allow for good ventilation when painting, especially if you have asthma like me.
2. Add a bold stair runner
Another big transformation that may be less expensive than you’d expect is adding a stair runner! It shouldn’t take a lot of money to to help your stairs have a good grip. This is a DIY project for the home you really can do in an afternoon.
Start with some off-the-shelf woven runners, and by using a hammer, stapler gun and upholstery nails you can upgrade your stairs yourself. This DIY tutorial is fantastic. Use this as a way to show off your personality. Think of a fun runner with a pop of color or exciting print. Whatever your choice, it’s a great conversation starter as your guests enter to your new home.
3. Build a small bookshelf
If you have a few hand tools, this is an easy bookshelf to build! You’ll need 1 “ x 12 “ x 14 “ pine board, 2 9 1 ½ “ wood screws and a Phillips head screw driver. Other tools that could help include a bench book, coping saw, sanding block with a coarse grit sandpaper, clamps, panel saw, woodworking vise or clamps, hand drill and brad point, 3 jaw chuck brace, a combo square and a pencil.
Unsure about a few of these items? No worries! An Atlanta based saw company called Saw Trax has many of these tools and more to help you out, including their vertical panel saw. They offer a varsity series vertical panel saw which gives you the capabilities of a much larger machine but with a smaller and portable package. The company offers several cutting solutions for their customers from hand cutting tools, saw kits, table top cutting tools and obviously their most popular product, the vertical pane lsaw. Versatility is key to making them a favorite in Georgia. They also offer a new line up of sheet carts such as dolly max, yel-Low dolly, scoop dolly and panel express to help you move items to your desired location.
4. Install an under-sink water filter system
There are millions of households which have switched to bottled drinking water because of their concerns over the taste and safety of their tap water. However, that is not a cost or environmentally friendly long-term solution. The problem often exists because our water comes from the ground well. To get clean fresh drinking water without enlarging your eco footprint, install an under-sink Water Filter System. While this may seem daunting, there are water filter systems designed for the average non-plumber to install. This may be one of the best home improvement projects for you and your loved ones!
Now that you have an idea of a few projects to help around your new home, which ones do you think you’ll want to start with first? Just remember that all of these items do not need to get done the second you move into your home. You really want to be happy with all of your decisions so take your time. And once you know what you want to do, don’t be scared to try these DIY ideas for the home.
