8 Things to Do in Atlanta in August
1. Root for the home team.
Your Atlanta Braves are coming back into town on Tuesday! Even if baseball isn’t your things, you have got to experience all the excitement SunTrust Park has to offer, including Alumni Weekend August 16-18. The highlight of this weekend, is the Braves Legends Parade on August 16th.
Begin Alumni Weekend by welcoming our alumni back home in the Braves Legends Parade! Line the streets of The Battery Atlanta to get up-close to your Atlanta Braves alumni. Also on Sunday, August 18 (and every Sunday this season), there will be FREE games in Hope & Will’s Sandlot for all children 14 years of age and younger. Stay to experience Kids Run The Bases (post-game) presented by Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta on Sundays too! Find more info at Braves.com/promos
2. Have a drink…of Coca-Cola.
World of Coca-Cola’s summer game is strong this year. The attraction is offering limited-time experiences to help fans make it their best summer ever.: Name a summer treat more classic than a Coke float. I’ll wait.
Now through the end of August, World of Coca-Cola is putting a twist on the typical refreshment with a build-your-own float experience. For $9.95, guests will receive a 16-oz. souvenir cup, a scoop of vanilla ice cream and free reign of the Taste It! Beverage Lounge, where they can choose from more than 100 familiar and exotic beverages to create their float. Flavorful floats aren’t the only frozen fun at World of Coke this summer. Also, for $5, a variety of slushie beverages will be available to help guests keep cool during the hottest time of the year. Choose from flavors including Melon Frosty and Blue Raspberry.
3. Take a walk on the wild side.
Open as of August 8, the all-new African Savanna is giving visitors a new reason to come to Zoo Atlanta. All life is connected on the savanna, with surprising connections to us here at home. Join the journey on the all-new African Savanna, featuring new and expanded habitats for African elephants, giraffes, zebras, ostriches, warthogs and meerkats. If you are extra adventurous, give Treetop Trail a try. It’s an aerial playground that will have you zipping and climbing like a tree-dwelling animal! Learn more at zooatlanta.org/africansavanna.
4. Rock and Roll…er coaster through your weekend.
Six Flags Over Georgia is still open and is still one of the best things to do in Atlanta for families. Spend the whole day at this gigantic theme park and also take advantage of the last days for the water park, Hurricane Harbor, this season. Six Flags Over Georgia offers many exclusive experiences you won’t find anywhere else.
Enjoy the planet’s best coaster collection with some of the fastest, tallest, and most groundbreaking attractions in the world. Whether we’re smashing world records with Great American Scream Machine, debuting a feat that has never been done before on Twisted Cyclone, or launching custom-designed rides like Monster Mansion, there’s no better place to experience once-in-a-lifetime moments. Check the park’s operating hours this month, as they differ slightly from earlier this summer.
Make the most out of your Six Flags Over Georgia adventure with these secrets.
5. Leggo my LEGOS!
LEGOLAND Discovery Center Atlanta invites families to discover their special ninja powers during LEGO NINJAGO: Master Wu’s Mission! I love that this indoor LEGO-themed attraction continues to switch up their offerings to keep things new and interesting. From conquering the Spinjitzu Mountain with mega mech machines to creating a ninja battle movie at the stop motion tables, guests will be among the first to train and become master NINJAGO warriors. Kids can test their agility in the laser maze and their speed at the Ninjago build table at LEGO Ninjago Training Camp. LEGOLAND Discovery Center is awesome for kids under 12…but moms and dads have fun too! LEGO NINJAGO DAYS runs through August 31, 2019.
6. Are you ready for some football?
Have you heard the exciting announcement from the Chick-fil-a College Football Hall of Fame? It’s FREE this month. Yup! In honor of The Hall of Fame’s 5th anniversary in Atlanta and college football’s 150th Anniversary, Chick-fil-a and Coca-Cola are partnering to offer FREE admission to the Hall of Fame the entire month of August. You just have to scan your Chick-fil-A app and you and your family are in. Additionally, to kickoff college football season, The Hall of Fame is hosting its annual Peach Bowl Football Fest on August 24th. This football extravaganza includes action-packed performances from drum lines, cheerleaders, and the hottest DJs in town.
7. Dream on.
We still have some time before the NBA season but that doesn’t mean there’s no basketball in town. Come on out to support the Atlanta Dream basketball. They are offering a SUPER DISCOUNT for the Women of Inspiration Night on Tuesday, August 20th at 7:00 pm. Tickets for this game are just $5.00 per person, no taxes no fees! These lower-level seats give your girls AND your boys a close-up view of some of the most exciting basketball playing around.
8. Take a hike.
Get outdoors this month! I know it’s hot but sooner than you think, it’s going to be too cold. The Atlanta area has some amazing hikes that anyone can do. Get the kids off the technology and explore a new area after school one day or on a weekend afternoon. Want to know a place to get started? Check out 365AtlantaTraveler.com’s list of 100+ easy hikes for kids and beginners.
BONUS: Keep the party at home.
Yes, you could go around town and take advantage of all these things to do in Atlanta, and you could also take some time for some fun at home. I was recently sent some Bunch O Balloons by Zuru and we had an impromptu water balloon fight with some friends. I could not believe how easy it was to fill these balloons. (Though do get the adapter if you want to do it with less of a mess.) Less than a minute and the kids had 100 balloons to throw to their heart’s content.
Why not add in some water guns and get really, really wet? It’s still summer! I recommend the new X-Shot by Zuru Water Warefare Blaster. You’ll want to join in the fun with this fast-filling blaster! Invite some neighborhood friends over and you’ve got yourself an unofficial summer party. Just go with it!
