Once upon a time, (ok…four years ago) I came upon my friends twitter updates from her visit to Walt Disney World. Funkidivagirl was highlighting her trip to the first Disney Social Media Moms conference. I was just getting my feet wet in the whole blogging/social media realm and the tweets looked amazing. The conference was full of interesting mom bloggers, great speakers, and special extras only Disney could provide. It was an invite only event. And I wanted in!
So I worked on my blog. And worked and worked. I wrote a lot and upped my social media outreach. And the next year I didn’t get invited. So I kept my head down and worked some more. My Twitter followers went up. I added some more freelance writing. I didn’t get invited the following year either.
I was a touch jealous each year (ok, I was a lot jealous) but after the envy passed I was happy for those that got invited. I read all the tweets. Checked out the pictures. Followed the hashtag (#disneysmmoms). I learned a lot. I also tried to better myself and my blog. I used this conference as a goal to strive for, a dream to achieve. I hoped I would get invited…one year.
It wasn’t about a free trip. (It’s discounted, but not free by the way.) It wasn’t about the swag. It wasn’t about bragging rights or even feeling like a VIP. There was just something about being in this select group and learning from these awesome people that drew me in. It was my dream to be invited. But I didn’t just dream…I worked at it too.
And guess what happened? As with all good Disney stories, there’s a happy ending. I was invited to the 2013 Disney Social Media Moms Celebration this May. Dreams, with some work and pixie dust, do come true. Let the celebration begin!!
What are you dreaming of?
