It’s cold in Atlanta. Very cool by Atlanta standards. Highs will be in the 20’s tomorrow with lows in single digits and the wind chill will be even lower. To my hearty Northern friends that sounds like a nice day for a picnic, but down here it is cause for frenzy. And that frenzy closed schools tomorrow. Argh!!
I get why they closed schools…school buses aren’t equipped for that cold, many kids don’t have proper winter clothing, there’s a possibility of icy conditions, etc…but that doesn’t mean I have to like it. I have been with my kids non-stop on a nearly two week visit to see my parents and sisters and I was looking forward to all the kids being in school tomorrow. I was counting on it. I was focused on it like a runner focuses on the finish line. And now I’ll have to wait.
|We go to Snow Mountain to see snow|
I love spending time with my kids but I just have so much to do. The house is still a pigsty since we left in a hurry Christmas morning to make our flight. I need to unpack and do laundry and open mail and vacuum and take down decorations and oh…WORK. Sigh.
The debate has been hot and heavy on Facebook today with some moms (like me) complaining about the “no snow snow day” versus other more prudent moms who agree with the idea of erring on the side of caution. It seems to be another North vs. South thing too. My Yankee friends (yes, they do still use that term down here) and I remember walking to school in two feet of snow in 10 degree weather. And we liked it. (I’m pretty sure we all walked 5 miles to school too. And uphill both ways.) While these fine genteel Southern folks have always understood the value of putting things off until tomorrow if today isn’t quite perfect weather (rain, snow, sleet, cold, etc). They don’t feel the need to push through like we did up North. I get that.
So tomorrow is a day off. It’s another day for the kids to try to adjust back to EST and a regular bedtime. Sure my house will continue to be messy but we’ll get out and have some fun. And I don’t have to wake up at 6am! While I don’t need a snow day (especially with no snow), I’ll take it and make the best of it. But come Wednesday…back to school with the whole lot of them. Hopefully.
